Explanation of the pelican

Legend of the pelican :

The young of the pelican, naked and blind at birth, are fed by the parents
by regurgitating food on its way to being digested,
which led to the legend of the pelican "taking its own flesh" to feed its young.

Therefore one thought that it gave its life for its young when it didn't find any food.
We discover its drawing on some old altars, symbol of Christ on the cross giving his life.
It has been chosen as an emblem of charity by our founder
(Caritas was the motto on the coat of arms of the Cardinal Lavigerie).
