Le Père Richard Kuuia Baawobr, M. Afr.

a été nommé Evêque de Wa (superficie 18.476, population 700.000, catholiques 341.000, prêtres 104, religieux 186), au Ghana. L'Evêque élu, né en 1959 à Tom-Zendagangn (Ghana), a prononcé ses voeux religieux en 1981 et a été ordonné prêtre en 1987. Jusqu'ici Supérieur général de son ordre, il succède à Mgr.Paul Bemile, dont la renonciation a été acceptée pour limite d'âge. Il a occupé diverses fonctions au sein de son ordre, Vice Grand Chancelier de l'Institut pontifical d'études arabo-islamiques), membre du Synode sur la famille.

Le Père Richard Kuuia Baawobr est né à Nandom-Lawra au Ghana le 21 juin 1959. Entré dans la Société des Missionnaires d'Afrique, il a fait son noviciat à Fribourg en 1981-1982. Puis il fut envoyé à Totteridge, Londres, pour étudier la théologie. Il s'est engagé à vie dans la Société par le Serment missionnaire, le 5 décembre 1986, et a été ordonné prêtre à Ko, au Ghana, le 18 juillet 1987. Sa première nomination en Afrique fut pour Livulu, diocèse de Kinshasa, Congo. Il y resta quatre ans.

Suivirent des études à Rome en Écriture Sainte (4 ans); une formation à la spiritualité ignatienne au Châtelard, Lyon, France; et une nomination comme socius au noviciat (année spirituelle) de Kahangala en Tanzanie (1996-1999). En 1998, le Père Baawobr avait participé au Chapitre général comme délégué des jeunes confrères. En octobre 1999, il était responsable des étudiants M.Afr. qui faisaient la théologie à Toulouse. Il a pris une année sabbatique en 2002-2003 pour continuer à travailler à la rédaction de sa thèse de doctorat en Écriture sainte. Il a été membre du Chapitre 2004 comme délégué de la Province de France et a été élu 1er Assistant général à cette occasion. C'est à ce titre qu'il a participé au Chapitre de 2010 et fut élu Supérieur Général de la Société. Il a défendu sa thèse de doctorat alors qu'il était déjà Assistant général, en novembre 2004.

The Holy Father has appointed:

Fr. Richard Kuuia Baawobr, M. Afr, M. Afr., as bishop of Wa (area 18,476, population 700,000, Catholics 341,000, priests 104, religious 186), Ghana. The bishop-elect was born in Tom-Zendagangn, Ghana in 1959, gave his religious vows in 1981 and was ordained a priest in 1987. He has served in a number of roles within his order, as well as deputy Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies, and member of the Synod on the family, and is currently superior general of his order. He succeeds Bishop Paul Bemile, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese upon reaching the age limit was accepted by the Holy Father.

Fr. Richard Kuuia Baawobr, M. Afr., was born on June 21, 1959 in Tom-Zendagangn, Diocese of Wa. He attended the elementary school in the village, he continued his studies at St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary and Nandom Secondary School. He entered the St. Victor diocesan Major Seminary in Tamale in 1979, after his philosophical studies. In 1981 he went to the Society of Missionaries of Africa, where he continued his studies for priesthood. From 1981 to 1982 he was in Fribourg, Switzerland, for his Novitiate. Subsequently, from 1982 to 1987, he completed his theological studies at the Missionary Institute London (MIL). On 5 December 1986 he professed his religious vows at St. Edward's College, London and was ordained a priest on July 18, 1987.

Since his ordination, he has served the following pastoral and academic roles: 1987-1991: Assistant priest in Livulu, Archdiocese of Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo; 1991-1996: Student of exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and at the Ignatian Spirituality at Le Chatelard in Lyon, in France, where he obtained a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture and a Doctorate in Biblical Theology; 1996-1999: Formator of the Missionaries of Africa in Kahangala, Tanzania; 1999-2004: Director of the formation house of Toulouse in France; 2004-2010: First Assistant General of the Missionaries of Africa. Since 2010: Superior General of the Missionaries of Africa (the first African to hold this position), Vice Chancellor of PISAI (Pontifical Institute of Arabic-Islamic Studies).
He was elected by the Union of Superiors General to attend the Ordinary Assembly of the last Synod of Bishops on the Family, from 4 to 25 October 2015.
